About the book

A story from inside the walls.

From the outside, a system built to help. From the inside, a world that too often runs on punishment, control, and fear. In The Light Within the Walls, social worker C.P. Handler takes readers inside juvenile detention, where boys carrying histories of trauma, abandonment, violence, and loss are often reduced to the worst thing they have ever done.

What she finds is not the story she expected. As she builds trust with youth navigating a system that promises rehabilitation while delivering something far harsher, their stories begin to emerge: stories of resilience, loyalty, heartbreak, and hope.

It is both a testament to the resilience of incarcerated youth and a clear-eyed call for a system that heals rather than harms.

What you’ll find inside
An unflinching, firsthand look at life inside juvenile detention
The boys behind the labels, told with dignity, not sensationalism
What trauma-informed care really looks like in a system unbuilt for it
A hopeful, human case for juvenile justice reform
For clinicians, educators, social workers, parents, advocates, and anyone who has ever been told who they are by a system.
“Behind those walls are real kids, real pain, real potential, and real stories that deserve to be heard.”

I’m so proud of u cp I mean like with all respect you are the goat just my favorite person u just have so much power an u channel it in the best ways possible all us Cleveland boys from the east side that never had a voice u are our voice and I hope u carry us with u where ever u go in life because u are with us %100

I’m soooooooo proud of you C.P and I want you to know that you are an inspiration to me and motivation for me to do great things. You’ve always pushed me to do better and I’m grateful for that because it made me a better person. Keep up the great work and continue transcending

so crazy cause u Neva gave up on me like u don’t understand how much that helps me cp tbh I be fighting for u cause u put to much time an energy in me to not just do nothing in life I appreciate u forever. #BloodMakesYouRelated LoyaltyMakesYouFamily. that’s were we at u will for always be in my favor… just good to know u got someone in yo corner I gotchu fasho… u really helped me grow from a kid to a man Thank You cp I love you hope u have a great day

Whoa I knew you was good but actually seeing it now I’m completely blown away. The level of intelligence and commitment that you have is unnatural. And that’s why you have so much respect and love from “your kids”. We are your babies and to see you continue to advocate and fight for us means a lot. You just didn’t come to work and now we are forgotten. You have been walking with us in our life and to actually have someone that shows us that level of care means more than you know. Your morals and ethics are one of a kind and you have touched my soul for life. Thank you for not being one of those people who sees something in our lives thats not right and being abused by those in power and don’t say anything.

Great morning cp once again I will like to say thanks for everything you have done for us up here in Ohio… you may not could’ve save all us but you saved a good amount and made a huge impact in ppl life that a lot of ppl love you for. You was always that ear we aint never have in are home environment you was always that understanding we needed when the wrld seem so in understanding towards us. Please dont never stop doing what you do for the youngs ppl or think your wasting yo time… your a gift from the above. I promise cp I’m gonna get out & do everything I said I was gonna do this go around. Something greats gonna come out this for me and my music career. I’m a go hard not just for me but for my family & you

Yung cp I forgot to tell you I still love you

I want to give my thanks and gratitude to Ms. CP for being more than just a person hired into the juvenile system to watch over us. She helped and understood us. In a detention center, it’s hard to trust anybody, really — but I trusted CP and still do, because I believe she has the best interest not just for me, but for anyone who deserves a better chance.
