For years I was the therapist inside juvenile detention, sitting across from boys the system had already given up on. The Light Within the Walls is what I saw there, and what I still believe about them.

From the outside, a system built to help. From the inside, a world that too often runs on punishment, control, and fear. Social worker C.P. Handler takes readers inside juvenile detention, where boys carrying histories of trauma, abandonment, violence, and loss are reduced to the worst thing they have ever done.
What she finds is not the story she expected. As she builds trust with them, their stories begin to emerge: resilience, loyalty, heartbreak, and hope.
The audiobook of The Light Within the Walls is out now on every major platform. Narrated by Gabra Zackman and Ron Butler, with C.P. reading the dedication, the letter to the reader, and the acknowledgements herself.
“I was one of the kids there, and C.P. was my therapist. She listened, held us accountable, and talked to us like we mattered.”
“After reading this book I see inner city criminal teenagers as human beings, the products of a difficult society and a horrible system.”
“I felt seen on almost every page! Accountability and compassion can exist together.”
“She refuses to let what they have done become the entirety of who they are.”
“The Light Within the Walls is a must read for all therapists, educators, and those seeking reform.”
“The light of human resilience — both of C.P.’s youth and C.P. herself — shines through and is so inspiring.”
“A riveting and eye-opening book. Disturbing but inspiring. This isn’t just a documentary, this is a journey.”

“An important resource for anyone working with vulnerable youth and a valuable contribution to trauma-informed, relationship-centered practice.”
